K-Drama Recommendation 2010

Here are a few k-drama recommendations with various genres.

1. Mischievous Kiss

"Mischievous Kiss" / "Playful Kiss" is a romantic comedy covering the romance between Baek Seung-Jo (Kim Hyun-Joong), an arrogant young man with a genius IQ, and Oh Ha-Ni (Jung So-Min), a ditzy young woman who gets poor grades, but whose heart is as powerful as Seung-Jo's mind.

The series is based on a Taiwanese drama and a Japanese manga book. It is called "It Started With a Kiss." It is about a girl in F class that falls in love with an A-class boy. She liked him since the first year of high school. Once, she decided to tell him she likes him but was rejected. So the story continues about the girl who keeps chasing after the boy she loves.

2. Oh! My Lady

In the romantic comedy "Oh My Lady" an ahjumma (older woman) becomes the manager of a popular celebrity. Yu-Ra (Park Han-Byeol) is the marketing team leader for a fashion brand. She's also the first love of top star Seong Min-Woo (Choi Si-Won). Seong Min-Woo is very arrogant. Yoon Gae-Hwa (Chae Rim) is a 35-year-old housewife who will become the manager.

3. Pasta

"Pasta" is an unconventional love story that revolves around the kitchen of an Italian restaurant, La Sfera.

Seo Yoo-Kyung (Kong Hyo-Jin) started her career as a third-ranked kitchen assistant for three years at La Sfera and on the day she finally gets to become an Assistant Pasta chef, Executive Chef Totti is fired and a new chef takes his place. Chef Choi Hyun Wook (Lee Sun-Kyun) was trained in Italy and is one of the most talented chefs in Korea. He is out to reform the kitchen and fires all the female chefs after just one day. This seemed like a coincidence at first, but it turns out it was all planned from the beginning because he clearly states that there is no place for a woman in 'his' kitchen. By contrast, he also wants to date Yoo-Kyung - outside of the kitchen.

The recurring theme of the cactus is a metaphoric picture that describes both Yoo-Kyung's journey to realize her culinary ambitions and the relationship that develops between Seo Yoo-Kyung and Chef Choi Hyun Wook. Full of both thorns and life, blooming only after much hardship, the parallels are unmistakable.

Also in the picture is an old rival, the beautiful and talented Oh Sae-Young (Lee Ha-Nee). Having known Chef Choi from culinary school in Italy, where she tampered with his ingredients to win the coveted first place in a cooking grand prix, her motives seem unclear and mildly sinister at first, evolving as the series goes on.

Kim San (Alex) is the mysterious "customer" who has secretly admired and loved Seo Yoo-Kyung for 3 years, never before revealing his true identity as La Sfera's real owner. His line "The customer is king," is a study of layered meaning, as well as how a line can be finely crafted with a minimum of words.

Lacking true villains, "Pasta" also has a dual-layered revenge plot running through it, as both manager Seol Jun-Seok (Lee Sung-Min) and the Unnis (Ha Jae-SukJeong Da-Hye, & Son Seon-Yun) conspire to get even with Chef Choi for the wrongs they think he has visited upon them. All agree Chef Choi should be fired, but the problem of how to make it happen is what drives the sub-plot along.

Comic relief is the role of Jeong Eun-Su (Choi Jae-Hwan), the lovable but slow-witted kitchen assistant whose late-night chance encounter in the kitchen makes for the oddest fulfillment of a fortune teller's prediction.

4. Personal Taste

Personal Taste / Personal Preference tells about Jin-ho Jeon as a very stylish young man with perfect looks. Jin-ho has also some faults which include being self-centered and obsessed with cleanliness. Jin-ho Jeon then comes across Gae-in Park (Son Ye-Jin), a woman hurt by love who is now looking for a gay roommate/friend. Jin-ho wants to live with the woman and then pretends to be a guy male.

5. Still, Marry Me

"Still, Marry me" / "The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry" centers around three women who are all 34 years of age and pretend to know everything about life.

Lee Shin-Young (Park Jin-Hee) works as a reporter for the TV broadcasting company UBN. At the age of 34, she is still single, but maintains a positive and bright character. 2 years ago she was sent overseas to train at the UBN's Washington D.C. bureau and, because of this, broke off her relationship with her fiance Yoon Sang-Woo ( Lee Pil-Mo). Now that Shing-Young is back in Korea she receives a wedding invitation from her ex-fiance. With so much stress from work Shin-Young starts to develop Bell's Palsy (uncontrollable facial contortions) and, because of this, can't work. Desperate for the love she then meets a man 12 years younger, named Ha Min-Jae (Kim Beom), who just may be the man for her.

Jung Da-Jung (Uhm Ji-Won) works as a Korean-English translator and is also good friends with Lee Shin-Young. She's a bit naive, not having dated much up to this point, but hopes to find a rich handsome man. Jung Da-Jung also hopes to marry this year. She then meets oriental doctor Na Ban-Seok (Choi Cheol-Ho) on a blind date and they seem to click. Shortly later, Na Ban-Seok proposes to her and they get married. Jung Da-Jung soon learns that marriage may not be all that it's cracked up to be.

Kim Bu-Gi (Wang Bit-Na) works as a popular restaurant consultant. After breaking off her engagement to a man she dated for 10 years, she starts to mentor good friends Lee Shin-Young & Jung Da-Jung. Then one day, a baby appears on her doorstep.

6. Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Set during the Joseon Dynasty, "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" centers around 4 young handsome students who study at Sungkyunkwan University and tells the story of their love and friendships.

Kim Yun-Hee (Park Min-Young) is a smart, responsible young woman with an independent drive. Since her father passed away she has worked to support her family, but also managed to do well in her studies. One day, Kim Yun-Hee takes the place of her brother and disguises herself as a man to take a men's only national exam. On the day of the exam, Kim Yun-Hee meets Lee Seon-Joon (Micky Yoochun) and becomes friends. Lee Seon-Joon comes from a privileged background and also possesses good looks. He is also arrogant. They both pass the national exam and even share a room together at Sungkyunkwan University.

At Sungkyunkwan University, Ku Yong-Ha (Song Jong-Ki) is good with singing, and drinking, and is also popular with the ladies. Ku Yong-Ha discovers that Kim Yun-Hee is a woman. For fun, Ku Yong-Ha does not reveal her secret and observes her throughout the school. Soon enough, Ku Yong-Ha starts to develop feelings for Kim Yun-Hee.

Moon Jae-Sin (Yoo Ah-In) is a guy with troubles at Sungkyunkwan. An impulsive person, Moon Jae-Sin tends to act before thinking. He hates his father who is a politician and his opportunistic ways. He comes to Sungkyunwan to get even with his dad. Moon Jae-Sin also discovers Kim Yun-Hee's secret. He attempts to protect her while wanting to spend the rest of his life with her.
