K-Drama Recommendation 2011

 

1. 49 Days


Ji-Hyun's (Nam Gyu-Ri) life seems to be storybook perfect. Her parents adore her and her friends all seem to admire her. Ji-Hyun is also engaged and set to marry her fiance Min-Ho (Bae Soo-Bin) in just a few days. Meanwhile, Lee-Kyung (Lee Yo-Won) is a woman who is completely distraught over her life and frequently contemplates suicide. She works the night shift at a convenience store, while sleeping in the afternoons.

On a fateful day, Lee-Kyung gets off a bus and wanders around. She then stands in front of a busy street and attempts to kill herself by walking into oncoming traffic. At that time, somebody saves her life by pulling her back. At this moment, Ji-Hyun, who is driving nearby, hits her brakes, but can't avoid the semi-trailer truck that has stopped in the middle of the road.

Moments later, Ji-Hyun walks out of her car in a daze. She is shocked to see herself being carted into an ambulance. The only person who seems to notice her standing in the road is a man on a motorcycle. The man on the motorcycle is the Scheduler (Jung Il-Woo) - an angel of sorts who awaits to take souls to their final destinations.

Ji-Hyun follows her body into the ambulance and watches as the paramedics attempt to revive her body. At the hospital, Ji-Hyun meets the Scheduler again. The Scheduler tells Ji-Hyun that if three people (besides her family) genuinely shed tears over her condition within the next 49 days, her body will awake from its coma and she can live again. Ji-Hyun instantly thinks of her fiance and two best friends and is certain she will live again. For the next 49 days, Ji-Hyun then takes over the body of the suicidal Lee-Kyung in her quest to find three such persons. Ji-Hyun gets a job at a restaurant owned by her friend (Jo Hyun-Jae).

At this time, Ji-Hyun's memory starts to return to her. Before the accident, Ji-Hyun remembers going to see her best friend In-Jung (Seo Ji-Hye) to show off her bridal gown. When she arrived, Ji-Hyun saw her best friend and her fiance sitting together in a car. They looked so intimate sitting together. She was then driving to confront them when the accident occurred. Ji-Hyun now realizes that it won't be so easy to find three people who truly love her.


2. City Hunter 

Lee Yoon-Sung (Lee Min-Ho) works at the Blue House for the National Communication Network Team. He graduated from M.I.T. in the U.S. and possesses elite skills as an I.T. engineer. At the Blue House, Yoon-Sung meets Kim Na-Na (Park Min-Young), who works as a bodyguard there. The two people fall for each other even though Yoon-Sung was warned not to fall in love. An elaborate plan for revenge is his ultimate mission.

Lee Jin-Pyo (Kim Sang-Joong) and Park Moo-Yul (Park Sang-Min) worked as bodyguards at the South Korean President's home the Blue House. 

Seven years later, Lee Yun-Seo finally arrives in South Korea. Prior to arriving in South Korea, Lee Yun-Seo studied at M.I.T. in the United States. He was also warned by Lee Jin-Pyo, prior to entering South Korea, to avoid falling in love because blood will be shed all around him.


3. Dream High 


"Dream High" takes place at Kirin High School of Art and follows the lives of students as they aspire to become superstars.

Song Sam-Dong (Kim Soo-Hyun) lives in the countryside and dreams of becoming an owner of a stock farm. He falls in love with Ko Hye-Mi (Bae Suji) at first sight and follows her to Kirin High School of Art. There he discovers his genius-like musical talent.

Jin-Gook (TaecYeon) is a gifted dancer, but a troubled student at school. The director of Kirin High School of Art (Bae Yong-Joon)) recommends to Jin-Gook enroll at his school. There, Jin-Gook's talents blossom and he now dreams of becoming a global star.

Exchange student Jason (Wooyoung) comes to Kirin High after receiving the top score for new applicants. He comes from abroad and shows outstanding skills as a dancer.

Ko Hye-Mi (Bae Suzy) is the most popular girl at Kirin High. She carries herself as a confident girl but inside hides a sad past. She dreamed of becoming a world-renowned classical vocalist, but after the collapse of her family, she had no choice but to enter Kirin High School of Art. She is loved by Song Sam-Dong and Jin-Gook.

Yoon Becky (Eun Jung) looks up to Ko Hye-Mi, who appears to have everything. They soon become rivals.

Eria (Yoon Young-Ah) is a popular teen star. She enters Kirin High School of Art and becomes the object of admiration by her peers. She looks forward to having a "regular" school life.


4. Heartstrings

    Set at an art university, the youth romance drama "Festival" depicts the sweat and tears of students who run toward their dreams of love and friendship.

    Kyu-Won (Park Shin-Hye) is a bright girl and a highly skilled gayageum player. She is in the Korean traditional music department. Kyu-Won also comes from a family that has one of the three best pansori singers in the world. Shin (Jung Yong-Hwa) is a cold and refined young man, who is a highly skilled guitarist. He is in the applied music department. They come from different family backgrounds and have an argument, but then start to like others.


5. Lie To Me 

A woman in her late 20's is always asked "when are you going to get married?" On a whim, the woman then lies that she did get married.

Kong Ah-Jung (Yoon Eun-Hye) is an administrative official for the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. She then coordinates a meeting for government officials. The meeting appears to flow smoothly and she is even praised by the minister. Disaster soon strikes when bees attack the meeting place and the meeting turns into chaos. Taking responsibility for the meeting, Ah-Jung is ordered to submit a written apology. That evening Kong Ah-Jung goes to a club and drinks away her sorrows.

Meanwhile, Hyun Ki-Joon (Kang Ji-Hwan) is the president of the conglomerate "World Group." He is handsome,  smart,  and from a rich family. But, in his teen years due to an accident, he lost both of his parents. Since that time, Ki-Joon and his younger brother were raised by his aunt. Ki-Joon has a responsible character as an older brother but his younger brother Sang-Hee (Sung Joon) is more carefree. The younger brother Sang-Hee then comes back to Korea and meets Ah-Jung at the club, while she is drinking away her sorrows. Ah-Jung and Sang-Hee start to chat and Ki-Joon shows up to look for Sang-Hee. He misses Sang-Hee. in front of the club Ah-Jung passes out and Ki-Joon takes her to the hospital. In order to ask Ah-Jung about Sang-Hee's whereabouts, Ki-Joon stays next to Ah-Jung's bed all through the night. The next day, they go their separate ways.

On the following day, Ah-Jung meets So-Ran (Hong Soo-Hyun) who stole away her first love Jae-Beom (Ryu Seung-Soo). So-Ran and Jae-Beom eventually married. After So-Ran and Jae-Beom became a couple, Ah-Jung studied hard and passed her government official exam to impress Jae-Beom. At the hair salon, Ah-Jung on a whim lies to the couple and tells them that she is married. Ah-Jung then goes to a hotel to pay Ki-Joon for the other night's hospital bill. An accident occurs and she spills tomato juice all over her sweater. Ah-Jung is so embarrassed she pretends to pass out. Ki-Joon picks her up and takes her to his hotel room. During this time, Ah-Jung's friends watch and a rumor soon spreads that Ah-Jung and Ki-Joon are married.


6. Padam Padam 

A love story between Yang Kang-Cheol (Jung Woo-Sung) - an ex-prisoner who was incarcerated because of his friend's conspiracy - and a sensitive, yet guarded veterinarian, Jung Ji-Na (Han Ji-Min). They meet by chance and begin to fall in love with each other.

Kang-Cheol and Gook-Soo (Kim Beom) leave prison on a furlough. Kang-Cheol has been in prison for 16 years. They have only one month left until their release. They are both given cell phones to take with them. When the phone rings they have to immediately answer where they are and what time it is. Both men are extremely excited to be on the outside. They get on a crowded subway and are pushed by other passengers. Kang-Cheol ends up in front of a woman. The woman's name is Ji-Na (Han Ji-Min) and she asks Kang-Cheol to give her some more space. Kang-Cheol can't move, though. When Ji-Na gets off the subway train she kicks Kang-Cheol and flips him the bird as the train departs. After Kang-Cheol and Gook-Soo get off the train they board a public transit bus. Gook-Soo asks Kang-Cheol to come and stay at his dad's house. Kang-Cheol doesn't like the idea and wants to meet a friend that was released from prison. Kang-Cheol saved his friend's life twice while in prison.


7. Protect The Boss

A woman struggles to find a career, but finally lands a job as a secretary. She then falls in love with her handsome boss ...

Eun-Sul (Choi Gang-Hee) applies for job after job but is passed over because she graduated from a third-rate university and doesn't possess a sparkling resume. In high school, Eun-Sul was notorious for fighting and fighting well. Then one day she decided to live her life the right way. She started to study hard and was able to pass a university entrance exam, even though the university wasn't prestigious. While attending university, Eun-Sul continued to study hard and also worked part-time jobs to pay her tuition fees. Now out in the real world, Eun-Sul finds landing a job extremely difficult.

One day, Eun-Sul receives a phone call and is informed she got the job. Eun-Sul becomes elated, but unbeknownst to her, the company that hired her is a loan sharking firm. Ji-Hun (Ji Sung) seems to be the perfect guy. He is from a wealthy family, is physically attractive, and works for the company which his father runs. But actually, Ji-Hun isn't interested in the family's company. Ji-Hun is also frightened to speak in front of others and be around strangers. He has ochlophobia - a fear of crowds, as well as agoraphobia - a fear of having a panic attack and embarrassing oneself. Neither his father nor his grandmother (played by legendary veteran actress Kim Young-Ok) knows of his condition. Ji-Hun isn't social because of his phobia and doesn't associate with others at the company. He's also a germaphobe, and appears to be developing more neuroses as manifestations of the anxiety he feels over working for his father, whose main style of parenting, and living, is bullying. Bullying is nothing new to president Cha(Park Yeong-Gyu). His brother's widow, Shin Sook-Hee (Cha Hwa-Yeon), still blames him for her husband's death, due to how hard president Cha made things for the deceased. Though the two of them keep up the appearance of filial love, the only thing they want from each other is to see the other fail, die, or both. Her son is Moo-Won (Kim Jae-Joong), a hard-working and conscientious junior executive in the company who seems only to want the company to do well, and is willing to pick up the slack left by Ji-Hun's failings. However, something about Moo-Won also seems a little too good to be true.


8. Scent of a Woman 

"Scent of a Woman" is a romantic melodrama that depicts the life of a 30'ish woman who works as a low-level clerk. She works hard but lives her life without much joy. She then learns that she is dying. The woman decides to travel aboard to find happiness.

Lee Yeon-Jae (Kim Sun-A) works at the travel agency Line Tour as an under-appreciated assistant. She's often belittled, sexually harassed, & tasked to do menial jobs by her boss, but she never stands up for herself, fearing for her job. Lee Yeon-Jae supports her mother and without her job, believes she won't be able to get married.

One day, because of a car accident, Lee Yeon-Jae goes to the hospital. There she meets Dr. Chae Eun-Suk (Uhm Ki-Joon). As children, Yeon-Jae and Eun-Suk were friends, but Eun-Suk now acts as if he does not know her. Dr. Eun-Suk informs Yeon-Jae that she has a tumor and needs another examination. Yeon-Jae goes back to the company and asks for a day off to get a medical examination. Instead of getting the day off, Yeon-Jae is assigned to be a guide for high-profile client Andy Wilson.

Kang Ji-Wook (Lee Dong-Wook) is the only son of Line Tour's company president. He is good-looking, physically fit, rich, and the successor to the company, but he isn't excited by anything. His father planned his marriage to Im Se-Kyung (Seo Hyo-Rim), the daughter of conglomerate Seo-Jin. Im Se-Kyung is beautiful but highly arrogant. She's the one who arranged for musician Andy Wilson's one-day tour.
